The ABC's of Kindergarten

Absences: If your child will not be in school, please send an email or call the nurse at (973) 429-3481.

Art: We have Art with Ms. Chesney once in a 6 day cycle.

Birthdays: Birthdays are celebrated in Kindergarten! Parents are invited in on their child’s birthday to read a special story to the class.  Please contact me a week prior to your child’s birthday so we can schedule a time! As a reminder, snacks are not permitted for birthday celebrations.

Check-Out Procedures: If you need to check your child out of school early please stop by the office to sign your child out.

Conferences: Parent-Teacher Conferences are held in November and March.

Discipline: We work hard as a class to make our classroom safe for all!

E-mail: My email address is sappleby@glenridge.org.  This is an excellent way to communicate with me. I check my email on a daily basis and will get back to you as soon as possible.

Folders:  Your child will have a folder that will be sent home daily containing homework, papers from the office, notes from me, newsletters, etc. Please check this folder nightly, remove any necessary papers, and return it to school the following day.  Any correspondence should go through this folder. This is where I will look for your notes, notes for the office, etc.

GREAT YEAR! It is my personal goal to make sure that your child has a great year and an unforgettable kindergarten experience. I am looking forward to a great year with your child!

Homework: Homework for the week is all sent home on Monday. It is all due back by Friday.  I encourage you to do one activity each night during the week.

Injury/Sickness at School: If your child is injured or becomes sick at school, Nurse Reilly will contact you or the person you listed on your emergency form. Please make sure you have handed in an emergency form.

Invented Spelling-This is what much of the writing in Kindergarten looks like. The boys and girls will write what they hear. Ex: Journal-jrnl, Book-buk…..formal spelling will come later. The more your child phonetically spells the stronger the link to developing decoding skills for reading.

Journals: We write everyday in Kindergarten.  Each child has their journal to practice writing. Encourage your child to write at home as well!

Kindergarten Newsletter: A weekly newsletter will be sent home each Monday with your child. Please be sure to read this carefully and look for information such as homework, upcoming events, our lunch schedule, sight words, etc.

Lunch: Our lunch time is from 12:00 - 12:30 pm.

LibraryWe have Library with Mrs. Fagan twice in a 6 day cycle.

Music: We have music with Mrs. H-K twice in a 6 day cycle.

Names: Please be sure to write your child’s name on all belongings brought to school:  lunch boxes, backpacks, coats, change of clothes, towels for rest time, etc.

Nurse: Our school nurse is Nurse Reilly. If your child has any health issues, please make her aware of these.

Office: Mrs. Dunworth is the school’s secretary.  You can reach Mrs. Dunworth at (973) 429-8308.   Use this number to report absences, pick-up changes, or other      pertinent matters. Your child should be signed out through the office if you are picking them up before dismissal.

Parent/ Teacher Relationship:  I feel that we must work closely together as a team to best meet the needs of your child and help him or her reach their maximum potential. Please contact me at any time. I am more than happy to discuss any comments, concerns, or questions you may have at any time during the school year!

Physical Education: We have P.E. three times in a 6 day cycle.

Quiet/Rest Time: We have quiet time from 12:30-1:00. Please send a large towel or blanket, labeled with your child’s name, to school to use during rest time. These will be sent home periodically to be washed and returned.

Recess: We will have recess each day from 11:30-12:00. We will be on the playground as weather allows. Otherwise, we will have free activity time in the classroom.

Snack: We will have snack once in the morning.  Please send in one healthy, nut-free snack.  It is helpful if you send the snack in to school in a labeled bag separate from their lunch.

Toys: Please keep all toys at home.

Unique: The special ages of four, five and six are a unique time of curiosity, energy beyond belief, and rapid learning. At this age children soak up information like little sponges and are being introduced to many new concepts and ideas. We use a lot of repetition and re-learning to ensure that these basic skills are absorbed and understood for lifelong learning.

Volunteers: I encourage lots of parent involvement in the classroom. We will be making a volunteer schedule for any parent who would like to work in the classroom during our Literacy Centers. This will begin in October. If you are unable to volunteer in the classroom, you may help out by making donations such as napkins, Clorox wipes, or tissues.

Websites: Visit the Glen Ridge School District’s website at www.glenridge.org or Forest Avenue School’s website to keep updated on school news and events.

Extra Clothes: Please send an extra pair of clothes with your child to leave at school.  Occasionally, we have accidents (bathroom, sickness, playground, etc.) at school and if we have a set of clothes available, your child can be made to feel more comfortable quicker.

You!: You are your child’s first and most important teacher. No one can influence your child’s life in the way that you can!

ZZZZZ’s: Make sure your child gets plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a consistent bedtime is a wonderful idea!

Zoom: Before we know it, this year will be over. I know we have a great year together. I am looking forward to working with each of you to ensure that your child enjoys his or her Kindergarten experience. Believe it or not, this year will ZOOM by!
